Description of what effects the edits/changes had on the original story/plot (opinion)

Basically, whatever story and characters were in the first season are lost to North American viewers.

 Detailed description of video edits

The entire first season has been cut. Story lines follow volumes 1-4 of manga, available translated from Viz Comms., reproduced in English in Shonen Jump magazine. Season likely skipped due to situations involving risk of death to players, and semi-torturous "penalty games" imposed on those defeated by Dark Yugi. (This is in the manga, but I don't know the extent in the TV series.) English anime picks up second series as the manga shifted its focus to the "Duel Monsters" game.
