Japanese name(s):
Shin Cutey Honey
English name(s):
New Cutey Honey
Overall description of edits/changes:
The English dub VHS and original bilingual DVD contained only one version of the opening, while the original Japanese version had two different OPs. The new "Anime Essentials" DVD contains the proper openings and endings. The original sub and dub scripts also contain more profanity than was present in the original Japanese dialog. DETAILED REPORT

North American company releasing title:
ADV
Japanese version that North American version is based on:
Original Japanese OVA release (there was also an old TV show and the new Cutey Honey Flash TV series)

 Description of what effects the edits/changes had on the original story/plot (opinion)

None, but it undesirable to change or omit the openings for any reason. The profanity changes do tend to make the show seem different than the original, but don't actually alter the plot or story.

Note: The new "Anime Essentials" DVD contains the proper openings and endings.

 Detailed description of opening and ending changes

For the English dubbed VHS and the bilingual DVD, ADV used a single opening for all eight OVA episodes. The opening ADV used for all 8 episodes was originally used for the Japanese OVA episodes 5 through 8 and had a song with English vocals (the original Japanese version used the English song as well, ADV did not dub it themselves as far as I know). The original Japanese OVA episodes 1 through 4 used an opening with different animation and a song with Japanese vocals. The proper openings were used on the English subtitled VHS release and some sample screen shots are shown below along with a Quicktime movie.

 Detailed description of English subtitle changes
The original subtitle script used on the English subtitled VHS release contained excessive profanities that were more explicit than the original. The Cutey Honey DVD uses a new script that reportedly is more accurate to the original curses used in the Japanese dialog.
 Detailed description of English dub changes
Like the original subtitle script used on the English subtitled VHS, the dub does use profanities that are more explicit than the original.

What you can do to get the unedited version (import and domestic)
Import and domestic versions:
  • Currently the only way to get the original opening is by obtaining an import version from Japan (should be available on assorted home video formats from various sources) or by obtaining one of the first two Cutey Honey sub VHS tapes ADV released.
Write/contact:
  • Please write or otherwise contact ADV and voice your opinion about the omission of the original opening for OVA episodes 1-4. Remember to be polite as possible and ask for them to not to do this for future titles. Suggesting they provide a high quality version of the original OP for download, might help as well. Threatening or sending them flames will only get your message discarded.
